Putting My Experience to Work

BIOGRAPHY

John T. McDonald was first elected Member of Assembly for the 108th Assembly District on November 6, 2012. John is a life-long resident of the City of Cohoes. He is a husband, father, has over 30 years of experience as a small businessman, pharmacist, former Mayor, and public servant who is deeply rooted in his community. His district includes parts of Albany, Rensselaer, and Saratoga Counties.

John has lived in the City of Cohoes for his entire life and his family has deep roots in the community. The 108th District includes Cohoes, sections of Albany, Troy, and the Hudson River communities of Green Island, North Greenbush, Rensselaer, Waterford, and Watervliet.

John is an alumnus of Keveny Memorial Academy and the Albany College of Pharmacy where he received a BS in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1985 and was later awarded a Doctorate of Humanity. As President of Marra’s Pharmacy, his family-owned business based in Cohoes, McDonald has practiced his profession and has adopted business practices and responsibilities that have led the business to become one of the largest independent pharmacy operations in the Capital Region.

Prior to being elected to the New York State Assembly in November 2012, John served as Mayor of Cohoes for 13 years. As a state legislator, he continues to focus on expanding economic opportunities, addressing the statewide imbalance in education funding, ensuring affordable and quality child care for working families, advocating for financial security for seniors, creating secure and sustainable middle-class jobs, providing quality and affordable housing opportunities, stopping unfunded mandates that burden local governments and negatively impact taxpayers, and helping small businesses navigate an ever-changing regulatory landscape.

During his tenure as Mayor, John was an active member of the New York State Conference of Mayors having served as president of the statewide organization. He chaired the Capital District Transportation Committee, RiverSpark, the Cohoes Industrial Development Agency, and the Cohoes Local Development Corporation. In addition, he has served on the boards of the Lakes to Locks Passage, New York State Heritage Areas Advisory Board, New York State Workforce Investment Board, State Comptroller’s Local Advisory Team, the NYS Local Government Records Management Council, and the Board of Governors for the New York State Municipal Insurance Reciprocal as well as many other regional councils and commissions. John currently serves as a member of the New York Department of Financial Services Drug Accountability Board and is the Chairperson of the NYS Assembly Committee on Oversight, Analysis, and Investigation.

Assemblymember McDonald has a unique perspective on the healthcare industry in upstate New York as a pharmacist and as one of the few practicing medical professionals in the New York State Legislature, as an experienced business owner, a former Mayor, and now as a state legislator. Aside from being active in the communities that he represents he enjoys working out at his local gym, golfing, and spending time with his wife Renee, and his children Emma Rose, Liam John, and Sophia Mary.
